Abstract
476,887. Hydromechanical variablespeed gearing. TENNANT, W. J. (Juno Corporation, Ltd.) June 16, 1936, No. 16767. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] A controllable hydraulic clutch 30, 31 of the F÷ttinger type, connects a loose sun-wheel 53 to the loose carrier 4 of a group of stepped planets 41, which carrier is connected through a one-way detent 62 to a controllable brake 65, actuation of which provides a definite lowspeed when required. A sun-wheel 10 is secured to the driving shaft 1, and a sun-wheel 20 to the driven shaft 2. For reverse, the loose sun-wheel 53 is braked at 55, the hydraulic clutch being emptied. Filling the hydraulic clutch is effected by using the brakedrum 57, connected to the loose sun-wheel 53, as a pump for lifting fluid from the fixed casing of the gear, and delivering it to a scraper 81, which, when manually pivoted to the position shown in Fig. 2, directs the entrained fluid to the hydraulic clutch, through a duct 8 and openings 35. Fluid constantly escapes from the clutch through exchangeable apertured screw-plugs 36. The usual main-clutch drives the gear.
