475,889. Proofing permeable materials. SUTTON, H., and LE BROCQ, L. F. May 28, 1936, No. 15110. [Class 140] [Also in Group XXXVI] Metallic objects such as castings, e.g. of aluminium and magnesium, having pores, cracks or voids are made impervious by impregnation with compositions comprising a soluble silicate and alkali phosphates, ttmgstates, carbonates or bicarbonates. The corrosive action of the silicate is thereby inhibited. A soluble or slightly soluble chromate may be added as an additional inhibitor. Impregnation may be effected by any of the methods described in Specification 453,226. Examples describe the use of aqueous solutions containing (1) sodium silicate and di-sodium hydrogen phosphate; (2) sodium silicate di - sodium hydrogen phosphate and potassium dichromate; (3) sodium silicate, sodium tungstate and sodium or potassium dichromate. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of alkali fluorides and molybdates.
