Abstract

475,246. Gas-blast switches. STRAUSS, (nÚe RUPPEL), F. March 17, 1937, No. 7895. Convention date, March 19, 1936. [Class 38 (v)] In a gas-blast switch in which the arc is extinguished by gases generated by the heat of the arc, and in which the separation of the contacts takes place in a closed space 8 which is opened by means of the movable contact 1 during the switching - off movement, the space is provided with a piston 3 under the control of a spring 4 tending to reduce the volume of the space, the movement of the piston being independent of the movement of the movable contact. In one construction, Fig. 1, the contact 1 passes through a tube 6 of gas-yielding material, and the piston 3 constitutes the other contact of the switch ; closure of the switch compresses the spring 4. On switching off, the contact 1 moves upwards more quickly than the piston, the movement of the latter being restrained by the pressure developed in the space 8 until the contact 1 has moved out of the tube 6. In a modification, Fig. 2, the contact 1 is tubular and surrounds a pin 7, preferably of gasyielding material, connected to the piston. In another construction, Fig. 3 (not shown), the piston slides on the filling pin, which is stationary.
