Abstract

[Class 103 (iv)] [Also in Group XII] The descent of the charge in a vertical retort according to the parent Specification is regulated by withdrawing, at each discharge a quantity of coke dependent on the kind of coal being treated, this being effected by employing a coke-receiving wagon 1 having pivoted side plates 6 which can be adjusted to vary the capacity of the wagon. The plates 6 are held in their adjusted positions by pins passing through holes 8 in flanges thereon and through one of a series of holes 9 in the end walls of the wagon. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the end walls are fitted with hinged discharge doors 10, while Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the coke is discharged on to an endless conveyer 18 through an opening closed by a sliding door 16.
