Retorts. - Coal or lignite is distilled at low temperature, 300 to 400‹ C., in an oven divided into a byproduct withdrawal chamber a, a distillation chamber b, and a combustion chamber c, another distillation chamber b and so on, the material being passed through the distillation chamber in a series of boxes or moulds g which are heated on one side only. Each mould is closed with a perforated lid to prevent swelling of the charge, and is attached to the adjacent ones, and on each side of the mould there is a rack which .engages with pinions regulating the progressive movement of the moulds through the oven. The moulds pass successively through the oven, and are removed by an endless band conveyer h to be emptied and re-charged. The distillates escape by apertures e at different levels, and the combustion products from the furnace through outlets d.
