Abstract

474,467. Rotary engines. HUGHES, C., and HUGHES, G. May 26, 1936, Nos. 14814. and 17267. [Class 110 (ii)] The engine comprises two or more cylinders 2 which revolve on bearings 13, 14, around an axis CC, and doubleended pistons 18 which revolve on bearings 27 around an axis PP. An end disc 4 is integral with a power take-off shaft 12. Each piston is attached to a radial coupling member 21 which may slide in collars 23 in a cage 22. The collars 23 may be dispensed with to render the pistons floating. The piston structure is supported on a stationary shaft 15. In the case of an internal-combustion engine, the fuel mixture enters through a passage 29, is compressed at one end of the cylinder, passes along a channel 45 to a combustion chamber 28, and is exhausted through a port 30. A six-cylinder engine, Fig. 2 has one pair of pistons coupled by radial arms 21 and bridges 33, but the other piston pairs on lines X-X, Z-Z, have yokes offset from the plane of the pistons. The cage 22 is an annular body with radial bosses 36 to carry bushes in which the coupling members are slidably and rotatably mounted. An annular fixed collecting chamber may surround the rings 7 to collect exhaust gases from the ports 30. Fan blades may be fixed to the rotating flanges 41 to assist discharge of exhaust gas,
