Abstract
474,092. Shock - absorbers. DOWTY, G. H. June 10, 1936, No. 16231. [Class 108 (iii)] An oleo-pneumatic shock-absorber comprises a pair of cylindrical members A, B, the upper A sliding closely within the lower and having, within or forming its inner end, an annular piston R adapted to displace liquid from the lower cylinder B against the pressure of air in the upper cylinder, a hollow cylindrical stem E fixed to the lower cylinder and passing through the piston, and an externally-adjustable restricting device between the interior of the lower cylinder and the interior of the stem. On compression of the shock-absorber, liquid is forced from the cylinder B through apertures H, G, I in the restricting device, up through the stem E, and into the member A thus further compressing the air. Upon re-extension of the shock-absorber, the liquid returns along the same path. At the end of the stroke, however, a flange M on the stem enters a cylindrical depression L in the piston R against the action of a spring O and forces the liquid trapped in the depression to leak away, the recoil thus being damped. The restricting device consists of a plug J screwed into a bolt F in which the apertures H, I are formed and which serves to secure together the cylinder B and stem E.
