Abstract

473,954. Vulcanizing long lengths. STEVENS, A. H. (Boston Woven Hose & Rubber Co.) March 5, 1937, No. 6611. [Class 70] In the vulcanization of long lengths, such as rubber belting, the material is subjected to a preliminary tension and stretching, which is maintained during vulcanization. The strip 18 is passed round a roll 20 against which it is pressed by an adjustable endless band 22. The roll 20 is provided with a brake 30 adjustable by a nut 46, and connected to a gauge 52. The strip 18 is drawn against the brake by a driven vulcanizing drum 10, to which it is gripped by an endless adjustable band 12. In a modification, the brake 30 is dispensed with, and the drum 10 and the roll 20 are connected by a chain and sprockets such that the peripheral speed of the roll 20 is less than that of the drum 10.
