Abstract

500,925. Vulcanizing belts. BOSTON WOVEN HOSE & RUBBER CO. May 18, 1938, No. 14829. Convention date, May 22, 1937. [Class 70] Conveyer belting comprising rubberized fabric plies is shaped and vulcanized bv continuously feeding it into a moulding cavity comprising bottom and side walls, applying an enclosing top wall, causing relative approaching movement between the sides of the moulding cavity and the edges of the belt, and applying heat. The unvulcanized belting 48 may be fed in a bowed condition by a roller 52 having conical portions 55, Fig. 2, into a cavity in the periphery of a vulcanizing drum 12. On rotation of the drum pressure is applied to the belt by an endless flexible band 11 which passes round the cylinders 15 and forms a re-entrant loop partially enclosing the vulcanizing drum. The belt then passes under a steam-heated jacket 14 and is vulcanized. The moulding cavity may be formed in the drum, or the drum may be plain and each side of the cavity formed by one or more superposed segmental belts 20, Fig. 2, hold in position by a spacer 27 and end-plate 36. Alternatively, the unvulcanized belt may be fed in a flat condition, and the sides of the cavity made to slide longitudinally on the vulcanizing drum, and caused to compress the sides of the belt during vulcanization by suitable mechanism such as cams.
