Abstract

473,722. Gaseous mixtures. NON- POISONOUS GAS HOLDING CO., Ltd. Aug. 14, 1936, No. 22488. Convention date, May 15. [Class 55 (ii)] In obtaining a gas substantially consisting of methane and hydrogen by subjecting water gas to catalysis, the water gas is obtained by gasefying the charcoal left as a residue from the destructive distillation of wood, peat, &c., the distillation and gasefication steps being carried out at relatively low temperatures of the order of 400-480‹ C. The distillation step of the process yields a liquid fuel in the form of tar, the final gas obtained being a gaseous fuel of calorific value of 7000 to 7500. A methane catalysis is used, preceded, if necessary, by a part removal of the carbon monoxide by catalysis with steam. The carbon dioxide present in the water gas, which increases the lower the gasefication temperature, may also be methanized by a similar reaction, namely CO2+4H2+CH4+2H2O, a temperature of 50‹ C. higher being necessary than in the case of the carbon monoxide methane catalysis. The steam obtained in the preliminary drying of the wood may be used in the gasefication step, or the water gas obtained from the latter may be utilized in the preliminary drying stage. The distillation and gasefication may be carried out in separate chambers. The initial material is impregnated with potash to facilitate the gasefication and after the latter step, the potash is preferably water extracted for re-use.
