Abstract
An insulating-material has as its principal ingredients one or more halogenated aryl hydrocarbons or derivatives thereof, together with a minor proportion of a compatible fixative material consisting of a nitrile compound, an amino compound or an unsaturated compound of the terpene and camphor class, which is capable of combining with hydrogen halide to form a non-corrosive material. The fixative may be benzyl cyanide or a halogenated benzyl cyanide, e.g. trichlorbenzyl cyanide. The latter may be prepared by chlorinating toluene in the presence of an iron catalyst at 25--50 DEG C. and then chlorinating in the presence of sulphur at 140--150 DEG C. the trichlorbenzyl chloride produced being heated and agitated with ethyl alcohol, potassium cyanide and water. Tetrachlorbenzyl cyanide may be produced similarly. Monochlor or dichlor compounds or bromine or iodine compounds may also be employed. Alternatively, the fixative may be lauronitrile, benzonitrile, toluonitrile, or their chlorinated derivatives, aniline, diaminobenzene, naphthylamine, benzidine, aminoanthracene, aminophenol or their chlorinated derivatives, isoprene, citronellal, citral, geraniol, dipentene, terpinene, pinene, oil of turpentine, oil of citron, orange oil or oil of thyme. The halogenated aryl hydrocarbons or derivatives may be chlorinated diphenyl, trichlorbenzene, chlorinated diphenyl oxide, chlorinated naphthalene or chlorinated diphenyl methane.
