Abstract
473,332. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., DAVIES, L. J., and FAIRBROTHER, J. A. V. April 6, 1936, No. 10153. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] An electric discharge lamp containing gas or vapour at a pressure of an atmosphere or more, which may, in the case of mercury, be 4000 lb. per sq. in., comprises a highly refractory envelope containing the electrodes and a jacket completely enclosing the envelope and containing a substance, other than a permanent gas, which, at the operating temperature of the lamp, evaporates to produce a vapour which is transparent to radiation and exerts a pressure on the outer surface of the envelope of such a magnitude as to prevent it from swelling due to the internal pressure. Acetic acid, carbon tetrachloride, acetone and ethyl alcohol are suitable volatile substances for use in the jacket. In a modification the pressures may be stepped down in a series of concentric jackets. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of permanent gases such as nitrogen or inert gas, in the outer jacket. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 461,334.
