Abstract

473,203. Vehicle wheels. ASH, C. S. April 8, 1936, No. 10391. [Class 144 (i)] A cap for covering the hub or the disc or spokes of a road vehicle wheel is inwardly flanged at its edge to engage one or more fixed retaining members on the wheel, and is secured to the wheel by a member which is movable outwardly from the axis of the cap to engage the flanged edge of the cap. In one form, a hub-cap 7, Fig. 2, is flanged at the edge 8 to engage over lugs 3 integral with, or welded, or otherwise secured to, the wheel structure 2, the cap being locked in position by the engagement of a head 10 of a screw 5 with the curled-in edge 11 of the flange 8. The screw 5 turns in a lug 4 on the wheel structure and has a cottar pin 6 to prevent complete withdrawal of the screw. A hole 9 in the cap allows a screwdriver to be inserted to turn the screw. The edge 8 may be curled as in Fig. 3, to engage under the heads 13 of studs 12 secured in the wheel, and the screw head 10 then engages within the curled edge as in Fig. 4. To prevent angular displacement, the screw head may have a cylindrical extension which passes through the hole in the cap when the screw is turned back to lock the cap. The fixed lugs may be formed with free resilient ends which are sprung open by the edge of the cap so that this edge may be gripped between the ends of the lugs and the wheel structure. A spring may be positioned between the cottar on the screw 5 and the lug 4.
