Abstract

472,149. Washing and drying machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 30, 1937, No. 2783. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1936. [Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Groups II and XXIV] In a washing and centrifugal drying machine the washing is effected by the oscillation of an agitator 46 within a receptacle 33 which is rotatably mounted about the shaft 10 of the agitator but which remains stationary, due to its inertia, during the oscillation of the shaft. When, however, the shaft is rotated unidirectionally and at a sufficiently high speed for centrifuging, a centrifugal clutch comes into operation to rotate the receptacle in unison with the shaft. The clutch comprises two shoes 52 held by means of split rings 54, during washing, against a squared portion 53 of a thrust collar 42 keyed to the shaft. On highspeed rotation the shoes swing outwardly and are cammed by the squared portion 53 against the inside of the sleeve 34 secured to the base of the receptacle. The shaft rotates in a spherical or other bearing 17 carried by the top of a sleeve 11. The means for mounting the lower end of the shaft 10 are those described in Specification 452,402.
