Abstract
472,126. Sealing metal into vitreous material by heat. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., GILSON, C., and BRETT, J. G. March 16, 1936, No. 7876. [Class 36] A method of obtaining a lead-in assembly for sealing into a quartz wall of an electric discharge device or the like consists in securing to or forming integral with a thin metal foil a lead-in wire and an electrode support, and then placing the assembly in an electrolytic bath to clean and reduce in thickness the assembly so that the foil after treatment has a thickness of at most 0À0006 inch. The foil may consist of molybdenum or tungsten. Since the electrolytic action is greater at the edge of the foil, a feather edge is produced and the subsequent sealing facilitated. In the example, the central portion 3 is pressed out from a molybdenum wire 1 and the assembly treated in an electrolytic bath to reduce the portion 3 to foil of the requisite thickness. A cathode 2 is welded to one end of the wire 1.
