Abstract

471,200. Treating sewage; cooling liquids. SCHREIBER, A. March 2, 1936, No. 6308. Convention date, March 1, 1935. [Class 111] [Also in Group XII] Sewage or foul water is passed in contact with air as a long, continuous, sinuous, shallow; stream flowing successively over each of a vertical pile of trays. The liquid is delivered at 22 to the top tray of the pile shown in Fig. 6, and is caused by ribs 20 to take the course indicated by the arrows. It passes through an outlet 23 to the tray next below and so throughout the pile. Air is freely admitted at the sides of the pile. As shown the trays are arranged with the ribs on successive trays at right-angles, and each tray is slightly inclined at right angles to the ribs thereon. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement comprising two piles 1, 2. The liquid from the top tray of pile 1 passes by a channelled bridge 7 to the top tray of pile 2, from which it is passed back by a bridge 71 to the second tray of pile 1 and so on through the piles. With a similar arrangement there may be a two-course flow, liquid being delivered to the top tray of each pile, flowing thence to the second tray of the other pile and then back to the third tray of the pile to which it was delivered, and so on. With two piles the trays of either pile are inclined in the same direction but in the opposite direction to those of the other pile. The trays may be supported directly on top of one another or there may be intermediate rectangular or wedge-shaped spacing pieces. The trays may be made of asbestos cement. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the apparatus may be used for other purposes, for example, cooling. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
