Abstract

Aerating.-A continuous spiral motion is given to sewage in open channels, such as are used in treatment by activated sludge, by means of flat vanes A, Fig. 1, placed in the channels at an angle to the direction of flow, or by paddle wheels having vanes E, Fig. 5, inclined to the plane of rotation. The vanes A extend to about half the depth of the liquid and may be placed in the upper or lower part of the channel. The vanes may be linked together so that the inclination of all may be altered by a single adjustment. The tank shown in Fig. 1 is provided with a board Q which directs scum to an outlet R.
