Abstract

790,436. Purifying liquids. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. May 8, 1956 [May 13, 1955], No. 13881/55. Class 46. A tower 1 of the type used in successive mixing and separation ol two partially miscible liquids of different densities, contains at least one tray assembly comprising a plate 7 extending across the major portion of the width of the tower and having a downwardly extending plate 16 at its edge, a minor portion of the plate 7 being perforated with holes 8. The holes 8 are enclosed above the plate 7 by a chamber 9 having a downward outlet 10 on the side of the chamber away from the gap 14 between the plate 7 and the tower 1. A plate 19 extends from the top of the tower downwards between the outlet side of the chamber 9 and the tower. Light liquid entering at 2 passes into the chamber 9 through the holes 8 and then through the outlet 10 where it mixes with the heavy liquid entering at 3. Separation takes place in the space 11 and the light liquid is removed through outlet 13 and the heavy liquid through outlet 12. A split baffle may be fitted below the plate 7 to smooth the flow to the holes 8 and the top plate 17 of the outlet 10 may be shaped with a toothed edge with upwardly turned tabs between the teeth. When a plurality of tray assemblies are used, adjacent trays are arranged in reverse relationship so that the gap 14 between the tray and the tower is on opposite sides of the tower for adjacent trays.
