Abstract

471,184. Liquid - blast switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and CLOTHIER, H. W. Feb. 22, 1936, No. 5384. [Class 38 (v)] Fluid-actuation.-In order to obtain high speed of operation of a liquid-insulated A.C. circuit-breaker having an arc-control device of the kind comprising an enclosure through which the contact is drawn and in which a relatively high pressure is produced by the arc, so that the compressed liquid &c. within the enclosure constitutes a deionizing fluid or blast which forces the ionized are gases through enclosure-vents which are laterally disposed with respect to the arc-path, the moving contact is actuated by a fluid-pressure operated device disposed within the breaker-tank adjacent the end of the arc-control device. The actuating device and the arc-control device are both carried by the removable cover of the tank. In the single-break oil-switch shown the cover A<1> supports two insulating slabs E, E<1> carrying between them by means of brackets F<2> a metal cylinder F, the operating piston F<1> of which carries the movable rod contact D. Operating fluid is admitted to the ends of the cylinder F through conduits G, G<1> which pass upwardly through bores in the plates E, E' and may serve to convey current to contact D. The arc-control device C, which may be of the character disclosed in Specifications 435,250 and 435,308 is either mounted directly on plates E, E<1> or on the bushing insulator supporting the conductor B' leading to the fixed contact B. The conduits G, G<1> are led at the back of the device C in order that the electrodynamic effect of the current therein may force the arc into the vents C'. The sliding contact between F, F<1> and between D and a gland F<3> on the cylinder-head may be supplemented or replaced by a flexible connection or by a fixed sleeve in sliding contact with D. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the arc-control device and conductor leading to the movable contact may be arranged as described in Specification 460,219, the conduits being constituted simply by the bores in the insulating plates. The parts may alternatively be horizontally arranged.
