Abstract

Quinine is added to heated cod-liver oil fatty acids (morrhuic acid) forming quinine morrhuate. Fatty acids of other animal or vegetable oils, e.g. olive, cottonseed or castor oil, or oleic acid may be used similarly.ALSO:A solution for injection in the treatment of varicose veins is prepared by making a solution of free quinine in an aqueous medium containing the sodium salt of a fatty acid obtainable from natural fats and oils. The quinine may be dissolved in hot benzyl alcohol and the solution mixed with hot aqueous sodium morrhuate, the product containing 5 or 10 per cent sodium morrhuate, and 2 per cent each of quinine and alcohol. Alternatively, the quinine is added to the free fatty acids of cod-liver oil and aqueous sodium hydroxide added to give a pH of 8-10. Benzyl alcohol may be added. Fatty acids of vegetable or animal oils, e.g. olive, cottonseed or castor oil, or oleic acid, or their sodium salts may be used similarly.
