Abstract

470,904. Arc converters. MARX, E., and SCHMIEDEL, H. J. Feb. 8, 1937, No. 3701. Convention date, Feb. 6, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] In an arc converter, through which a gaseous fluid is passed, one or both main electrodes comprises a hood 3, Fig. 1, and a rod 4 which is adapted to be advanced towards a main electrode, and the hood 3 is connected to the rod 4 through an impedance, e.g. the resistance 7, in such manner that if the arc roots on the hood 3 the voltage drop across the impedance will operate a relay to advance the rod 4. A starting voltage is applied through terminals 10, 11 between the screen electrode 2 and the hood 3 and the main voltage is applied to the main electrodes through the terminals 12, 13. A hollow rod 4, Fig. 2, is provided with an insert 14 and is centred with respect to the support of the hood 3 by an insulating ring 15 and an insulating ring 16 provided with a brass bush which is screwed internally. The rod 4 is screwed externally so that when rotated by a motor it is advanced ; it may be cooled by fluid circulated through the space 19 or circulated by means of an internal pipe through the interior of the rod 4.
