Abstract
470,898. Digesters. TOURNEL, M. C. G. March 2, 1936, No. 35086. Divided application. [Class 64 (i)] A rotary metallic autoclave 1 for hydrolyzing cellulose and cellulose complexes has an enamelled inner surface free from sharp angles, e.g. spherical, an outer curved steam supply pipe 11 with short perforated tubes 12 projecting into the autoclave, and a steam outlet pipe 21 terminating therein in an upwardly bent extension. Steam from a pipe 16 passes to a lower semicircular chamber 17 in a stationary block 15 and thence through a passage 20 in a block 14 rotating with the autoclave to the tubes 12 only when the latter are submerged in the material under treatment. The steam pipe 16 may have an injector 28 permitting entry of treating liquors from a tank 29 with the steam, which passes through a hollow shaft 4 to the pipe 11 and leaves the perforations in the . tubes 12 tangentially. The stationary steam outlet 21 has a perforated head 23 and passes through a shaft 5 to coils 10 in a cooler 9. The autoclave contains carbon ring electrodes 36 and has apertures 2, 3 for filling and emptying. Gases may be withdrawn after treatment to a condenser 34 by a pump 35.
