470,810. Telescopes. SOC. GENERALE D'OPTIQUE SOC. ANON. DES ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS HUET & CIE ET JUMELLES FLAMMARION. Feb. 26, 1937, No. 5876. Convention date, April 29, 1936. [Class 97 (i)] In hermetically sealed telescopes, field glasses, or the like, internal means for adjusting the magnification are moved by an external operating member having a movement permitting airtight closure where the member passes through the wall of the instrument. As shown in Fig. 1, a telescope has an objective Ob and two eyepieces O<1>, O<2>. A slide C movable through an aperture in the casing carries two prism systems P<1>, P<2>. In the position shown the prism P<1> reflects light from the objective into the eyepiece O<1>. By pressing the slide C into the casing the prism P<2> is moved to a position where it reflects the light from the objective into the eyepiece O<2>. The aperture may be sealed by a collapsable sleeve M, Fig. 3, secured at one end to the slide C and at the other to the casing K. In a modification one prism system may be fixed in front of one eyepiece and the other prism system or a part only of it'moved by the slide C to intercept the light and pass it to the other eyepiece. In a further modification a single prism system may be rotated from a position in front of one eyepiece to a position in front of the other by a rack and pinion operated by the slide C.
