Abstract
A substance exhibiting artificially induced radio-activity is prepared by subjecting to an intensive electric field an alloy consisting essentially of aluminium and magnesium with or without the addition of any or all of the elements silicon, copper, tin, lead, manganese, and mercury. The constituents are melted together and subjected while in the furnace to the electric field for a period of ten minutes. The field may be applied by connecting two circular zones of the furnace to a high tension direct current machine, the tension for a 10 centimetre layer of the molten metal being of the order of 3000 volts.ALSO:Alloys in which artificial radio-activity is produced by treatment with an intensive electric field consists essentially of aluminium and magnesium with the addition of any or all of the elements silicon, copper, tin, lead, manganese, and mercury. A specified alloy contains all the said ingredients in the following preferred proportions, viz.: aluminium 73, magnesium 6,4, silicon 3,2, copper 7,5, tin 5,1, lead 2,4, manganese 1,89, mercury 0,5.
