Abstract

470,262. Railway rail joints. WILLIAMS, L. WYNN-. Feb. 11, 1936, No. 4099. [Class 104 (ii)] In an insulated rail joint of the kind formed in separate halves 1, 2 each adapted to be bolted to one of the rail ends provided with a laterally extending portion 9 secured through the medium of an insulating layer 13 to the external portion 10 of the other half by means of a pair of fishbolts 11, 12, the fishbolts are arranged with the nut engaging portion 25 or 26 of one bolt projecting beyond or in staggered relation to the adjacent end of the other bolt so as to facilitate access to and adjustment of a nut by a standard spanner. The nuts 11a, 12a may be caused to project by thick washers 31, 32 or they may be made deeper than the adjacent heads of the bolts. The insulating layer may be divided by a middle slit 22, forming two main portions 19, 20 engaged between the adjacent pairs of lateral portions 9, 10 and a narrower portion 21, permitting limited resilient movement of the parts 19, 20, when the fishplates are being adjusted.
