469,459. Stapling fibres. STOCKS, H. B. Jan. 30, 1936, No. 2829. [Class 120 (iii)] A machine for cutting fibres, particularly those in an entangled condition, into staple lengths comprises an upper pair of gear driven shafts c each carrying a number of similar and evenly-spaced circular cutters d for cutting a lap of the fibres into separate strips and a lower pair of shafts f each carrying a cylindrical helically-bladed cutter g<1> for cutting the strips into staple lengths ; the cutters d slightly overlap and are caused to contact lightly by axial pressure, e.g. by a spring e<1> and the blades of the cutters g<1> overlap and, during rotation, are yieldingly pressed against each other. The cutters g<1> may be driven by helical gears k and one of them yieldingly held against the other by a compression spring m or one only of the cutters g<1> may be driven, the other being driven by the driven cutter against the action of a brake band or other braking means.
