Abstract
497,252. Cutting paper sheets. HIROHASHI, T., and TAIPUSHOJI KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Dec. 6, 1937, No. 33757. [Class 31 (i)] [Also in Group XV] A bookbinding process consists in making spaced series of serrate cuts through a number of sheets of paper to produce intermeshing teeth or tongues, folding the sheets into a signature along the centre line of the series of cuts, gathering a number of signatures thus prepared into book form and glueing the teeth on the back of the book together, the bookbinding then being completed in known manner. A machine is provided for forming the serrate cuts and folding the sheets into signatures. As shown, the sheets, after being cut, are folded so that the serrations or teeth 5 of one half and those 6 of the other half are arranged alternately. A number of such signatures are gathered together and glued at the serrations on the back. The cutting and folding machine for the signatures comprises a frame 7, a guide 8 (not shown), secured thereon a cutter carrier 9 adapted intermittently to reciprocate vertically on the guide 8, and dies 35 which cooperate with cutters 11 on the carrier 9. The cutters 11 are detachably secured in spaced relationship on the carrier 9, and a folder 13 provided with a number of spaced folding- tongues 13<1> arranged between the cutters is also detachably secured to the carrier. The dies 35 are secured on a carrier 36 which is reciprocated horizontally in timed relationship with the carrier 9 by means comprising a pin 40 on the carrier 36 engaging in a slot in one end of a pivoted lever 37, the other end of the lever engaging in a stepped slot 41 in a plate 42 secured to the carrier 9. Beneath the cutter dies 35 are two constantly rotating shafts 49 on which are a number of delivery rollers 48, the bearings 50 of the shafts being resiliently pressed together. In operation, a number of superposed sheets is placed on spaced horizontal supporting plates 65, 6(i (the plate 66 not being shown), and the carrier 9 is made to descend against the action of a spring by depressing a foot-pedal 26 which controls a one-revolution clutch, whereby an eccentric 16 is driven one complete revolution by a constantly rotating shaft 15, the eccentric being connected by means of a strap 17 and rod 18 to the carrier 9. The cutters 11 co-operate with the dies 35 to form a series of serrate cuts in the sheets, the dies are then retracted by the lever 37, and on the carrier 9 continuing its downward movement the folding- tongues 13<1> fold the sheets into the bite of the delivery rollers 48. The shafts 49 of the delivery rollers 48 are geared together, and one of them is driven from the shaft 15 by means of a belt and a pulley arrangement.
