Abstract

468,902. Cans, drums, &c. RHEEM MANUFACTURING CO., and SOUTHERN PACIFIC TRACKS. July 14, 1936, No. 19519. Convention date, July 29, 1935. [Classes 21 and 66] An extensible, and to some extent flexible, spout for cans, drums, &c. consists of a number of tubular sections 17 either diminishing or increasing in diameter in the outward direction, the innermost section being formed by the inner wall 12 of a channelled member which is secured in an opening 6 in the vessel, the free edge 21 of the outer wall 10 of said member being adapted to receive a closure cap. The opening 6 may, as is shown, be formed in an upset portion 7 of the head of the vessel. In the construction shown the sections diminish in size outwardly, the outermost one 171 being formed with a flange or lip 20. Venting of the vessel during pouring is provided for by a pipe 28 communicating with the channel 26 and terminating at the opposite edge of the vessel to the opening 6. The attachment of the spout is effected by means of a ring 14 engaging the parts 12, 13, and folded into a seamed joint with the co-operating flange 16 of the head of the vessel, the part 19 of the ring extending into the opening 6 and forming a support for the sections 17 when retracted. In a modified construction the mouth of the outer member 10 may be covered by an integral closure portion provided with a weakened margin adapted to be broken to gain access to the spout. A threaded cover is then provided for use after removal of the closure.
