[Class 27] The vertical rotary pillar 1 of a coin-freed turnstile provided with arms 2 has fixed to it a cam 8 which drives anticlockwise a member 10 pivoted on a short spindle 5 and biassed by a spring 11 so that a roller 12 thereon is kept in contact with the cam. Anticlockwise rotation alone of the arms 2 and pillar 1 is permitted, rotation in the reverse direction being prevented by a pawl and ratchet wheel. Normally, the turnstile is locked by the engagement in a notch 14 on the member of the nose 15 of a locking member 16 freely rotatable on the pillar 1 and held in locking position by a spring 17. When a coin is inserted, a solenoid 22 is momentarily energized and an armature rod 21 moves to the right to release the locking catch 16 which is connected by a link 19 to a lug 20 on the rod 21. The turnstile arms 2 can now be moved in the direction of the arrow, the cam 8 driving the member 10 by one of the slanting surfaces 28 thereon engaging the roller 12. The line of action of the thrust between the surface 28 and the roller 12 passes close to the pivot 5, so that the pressure between the nose 15 and notch 14 is small during the initial rotation and the locking catch is not thereby prevented from being released, should a pressure be exerted on the arms 2 before the insertion of .a. coin. When the armature rod moves to the right, it is held in that position by the arm 29 of a lever 23 controlled by a spring 25 engaging an abutment 30 on the rod. An abutment 27 on the member 10 engages the lever 23 and rotates this to release the rod 21 so that the locking catch returns to its normal position ready to engage the notch 14 when the turnstile has completed a quarter-turn. At the end of this quarter-turn, the cam 8 engages a second roller 26 on the member 10 to return this member to its initial position. Coin action, multiple - coin.-When the armature rod 21 moves to the right, a finger 35 thereon closes contacts 33, 34 to energize an electromagnet which moves an obturator into the coin track to detain further coins that may have been inserted. The contacts are held closed, when the rod 21 is released, by one arm 41 of a bell-crank lever 36, 41 controlled by a spring 38 and displaceable by projections 40 on the cam 8.
