Abstract
Terpineol is prepared from pinene direct, by treating the pinene with a mixture of formic and ortho-phosphoric acids, each of a concentration of 60--75 per cent by weight, the amount of p phosphoric acid in the mixture comprising 20--40 per cent by weight of the formic acid present. The phosphoric acid is stated to catalyse the reaction between the pinene and formic acid and to hydrolyze the resulting terpinyl formate. The pinene may be treated alone or in a solvent, at a temperature below 50 DEG C. and preferably 35 DEG C. On completion of the reaction, the acids are allowed to separate in a layer and drained off for re-use, whilst the oily layer is subjected first to treatment with a little caustic soda to saponify any terpinyl formate present and then to fractional distillation. Examples are given of the treatment of pinene alone, of turpentine containing pinene, and of pinene dissolved in other terpenes, using mixtures of 70 per cent by weight formic acid and 70 per cent by weight phosphoric acid in appropriate proportions; the products comprise a mixture of a - and b -terpineol, the a -compound predominating.
