Abstract

Cellulose acetate artificial silk is coloured yellow shades by applying to the material a Bzl-alkoxybenzanthrone wherein the alkoxy group has 2-5 carbon atoms and may itself carry a substituent, excluding a sulphonic or carboxylic acid group, which in the case where the substituent is an alkoxy group contains not more than 5 carbon atoms. The alkoxy substituent may be the residue of a primary alcohol, for instance, ethoxy, n-propyloxy, n-butyloxy-, n-annyloxy-, or the residue of a secondary or tertiary alcohol such as isopropyloxy, isobutyloxy-, tert.-butyloxy, or b -chlor-ethoxy, b -oxyethoxy-, b -methoxyethoxy, b -ethoxyethoxy. These derivatives are prepared by treating Bzl-oxybenzanthrone with alkyl esters of inorganic acids or of arylsulphonic acids. In examples acetate artificial silk is dyed in an aqueous bath of Bzl-ethoxybenzanthrone or printed with a paste of Bzl-ethoxybenzanthrone, water, gum Senegal thickening and glycerol, dried, steamed at 100 DEG C., and then washed. Acetate artificial silk may similarly be dyed or printed with Bzl-b -chlorethoxybenzanthrone, Bzl-isopropyloxybenzanthrone, Bzl-n-butyloxybenzanthrone, Bzl-n-amyloxybenzanthrone, Bzl-b -methoxyethoxybenzanthrone, and Bzl-ethoxyethoxybenzanthrone.
