Abstract

Aluminium powder, for use in producing decorative effects, fast to light, on paper, fabrics, &c. is coloured by treating it with a hot aqueous solution of a heteropoly acid compound derived from tungsten and molybdenum and, thereafter, applying a basic dyestuff. In an example, the powder, preferably freshly prepared, is wetted with methylated spirit, boiled for 45 minutes with an aqueous solution of sodium phosphotungstomolybdate prepared as described in Specification 216,486, [Class 2 (iii)], filtered, washed, stirred into an aqueous solution of Acridine orange R which is then warmed to 60 DEG C. and so maintained for 5 to 10 minutes, washed and dried to obtain a lustrous yellow powder; the dyestuff may be replaced by Rhodamine B, Chrysoidine or Malachite green.
