Abstract
Metal oxide cutouts are made by oxidizing the metal to form an oxide coating having a thickness sufficient to give a breakdown value greater than that desired, the thickness of the coating being then reduced in an acid bath to the thickness which gives the desired breakdown value. The coated metal may then be annealed to stabilize the breakdown characteristics of the coating. Copper may be oxidized at about 1055 DEG C. to form a coating of red and black oxides, the metal is then cooled and washed in a sulphuric acid bath to remove a substantial proportion of the black oxide and to leave a coating of the desired thickness and breakdown value. The metal is then annealed at about 1000 DEG F. for 11-16 minutes, quenched in a bath at about room temperature, and dried by a current of compressed air the temperature of which is a few degrees lower than room temperature. If the sulphuric acid bath comprises a solution of 35 cc. of commercial acid in 1000 cc. of water and the treatment is continued until only about 5 per cent of the original black oxide is left, the finished article will have a breakdown value of between 50 and 90 volts.
