Abstract

465,329. Spray carburetters. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES. July 30, 1936, No. 21081. Convention date, Aug. 7, 1935. Addition to 446,144. [Class 7 (iii)] In a fuel-supply system operating periodically with suction or supercharging and in which the compressor is provided with a separate suction pipe to permit selection of the optimum sizes of air opening and fuel nozzle therefor, as claimed in the parent Specification, the change over from suction to pressure operation takes place substantially instantaneously after the precompressor has attained or almost attained its full output and the reverse change occurs, after the compressor has been shut off, in the same manner. An induction manifold 1 is supplied alternatively through a suction conduit 2 or a pressure conduit 3 leading from a compressor 4 provided with a separate suction inlet conduit 5. Throttle valves 15, 20 controlling the conduits 2, 3 are interconnected by a link 34 and operated by an extensible rod 42, 43 which connects them with the control of a fuel cock 32 associated with the supply to the compressor. The cock 32 is actuated through a rod 30 by a spring-pressed stud 29, and an arm 23 connected to the rod is adapted to operate a cock 24 in an oil pressure line to actuate a piston 26 which engages the clutch 28 of the compressor. Depression of the stud 29 by an arm 21 on the accelerator pedal 14 simultaneously opens the cocks 24, 32 and tensions the rod 42, 43, the change over valves 15, 20 being locked in the position shown by interengaging hooked arms 37, 40 on the throttle valve 20 and a lover 39 actuated by a piston 17 in communication with the pressure conduit 3. As pressure builds up in the conduit 3, the piston 17 disengages the hook 40 and the rod 42, 43 instantaneously effects the change over. The depression of the accelerator pedal 14 also tensions an extensible rod 12, 13 connecting the pedal to a throttle valve 11 in the suction conduit 2 and thereby permits a rigid two-armed lever 44, 45 to move off a cam 46 and engage its lower arm 45 behind a stop 47 on the rod 30 to look the throttle valves in the pressure operation position. On lifting the accelerator pedal 64, the cam 46 removes the arm 45 from the stop 47 and the change over to suction operation takes place.
