Abstract

<PICT:0464819/III/1> An apparatus for neutralizing and filtering oils and other liquids consists of a filter chamber containing a solid porous filter body which neutralizes acid substances in the oil and is formed of kieselguhr or similar filter material and a binder such as china clay or plaster of Paris, and having means for reducing the pressure on the outlet side of the filter to draw the oil therethrough, and means for blowing air through the filter in the reverse direction for cleaning the filter. A storage tank 100 containing used lubricating oil is provided with a strainer 11 to remove coarse impurities and is connected through a pipe 12 and valve 32 to a filter chamber 13. This chamber is surrounded by a hot-water jacket 15 and contains pots of the filter material 18 mounted in a plate 17 below a header 19. The header is connected through pipes 20, 21 and valve 22 with a tank 23 for purified oil. Suction side of a vacuum pump is connected to the tank 23, and the compression side to an air bottle 30, which is connected to the valve 22. In operation, dirty oil is drawn into the filter chamber where it is heated to 80 DEG C. and passes through the filter to remove solid and acidic impurities, to the tank 23. At intervals valve 32 is turned to cut off oil supply, and compressed air is blown in from the bottle 30 through pipe 31. Sludge on the filter pots is thereby blown off the filters and is removed through a pipe 33. Vegetable oils, transformer oils, wine or varnishes may also be treated.
