Abstract

<PICT:0426161/III/1> In an apparatus for recovering oil from waste waters such as bilge, condenser water or garage waste as described in the parent Specification and consisting of a settling tank having three sections, the separated oil is filtered before discharge from the apparatus. A tank A is divided into three sections by partitions, and the oil-laden water enters through a pipe B and flows over a cone C mounted on a tray D to the first section A<1>. The liquid then flows through a perforated partition E into a second section A<2> in which the level is regulated by a float H and a valve I connected to the purified water discharge J which is also provided with an air snore pipe M preventing oil mixing with the water discharge. The separated oil flows over or through a perforated plate G into a third section A<3> containing a demountable filter O containing metal gauze, sawdust, or wool waste. Filtered oil is discharged at L. The settling tanks may be heated. In the treatment of garage waste, the cone C and tray D in the first section are replaced by a vessel having a perforated wall, above which is mounted a grating through which waste is admitted. In the treatment of boiler feed water the water may be admitted through a pipe into the first section and heated during purification by admitting steam through the pipe B.
