Abstract

464,320. Electric heating resistances. JOHNSON, G. W. (Proctor & Schwartz, Inc.) Aug. 27, 1936, No. 23554. [Class 39 (iii)] A self-supporting heating element 3 shaped to fit a cavity in an iron or other appliance is formed by moulding insulating material about a conductor. The element is then placed in the cavity and subjected to sufficient pressure to crush and consolidate the element in the cavity. The element may be formed as a bar with notches 1 at which it can be bent to fit a V-form cavity in the sole plate 5 of an iron. Triangular-section inserts are fitted in the cavity at the bends. Cover plates 8 are fitted over the element and the edges of the plates are forced into tight engagement with the walls of the cavity when the crushing pressure is applied. The insulating material may be 50 per cent fused alumina, 25 per cent talc, and 25 per cent clay. An organic binder may be added thereto. The element is dried and then baked at 500 to 600‹ F. before being placed in the cavity.
