Abstract
Merwinite, 3CaOMgO.2SiO2, is used as a refractory, either alone (when synthesized by heating a mixture containing lime, silica and magnesia) or, as the naturally-occurring mineral, mixed with periclase. As raw materials for its manufacture may be used dolomite, magnesian limestones, silica sand, serpentine, talc, olivine and calcareous and siliceous magnesites. The mixture is burnt to about 2800 DEG F. Any excess of magnesia present is converted into periclase.
