[Class 8 (i)] The beater 21 of a vacuum cleaner is connected with or constituted by a movable diaphragm 18 dividing the nozzle into parts connected by an opening in the diaphragm or a connection controlled by a valve 27. The stem of this valve is connected to a second diaphragm 33 within an upper compartment of the nozzle, and a passage in the stem connects the underside of this diaphragm with atmosphere, while the upper side communicates with the suction space 30 above the beater diaphragm. Suction raises the upper diaphragm and closes the valve ; the beater is then raised until at the end of the stroke it parts from the valve, when the inlet of air raises the pressure above the upper diaphragm, allowing the valve to fall under spring pressure and the beater to be pressed downwards by leaf springs 25. When running over a hardwood floor, the flow of air gives sufficient pressure above the upper diaphragm to keep the valve permanently open, stopping the beating action. In a modification, the valve stem is carried merely by a spring, and the valve may be locked in open position by depressing and turning the stem, causing engagement of a pin in a groove. In a further modification, the valve lies above the diaphragm and is carried by a diaphragm subjected to atmospheric pressure and vacuum alternately, under the influence of tappet valves actuated by the beater diaphragm.
