Abstract
446,841. Suction cleaners. HURLEY, M. S., Coity, Widney Lane, Solihull, Warwickshire. Dec. 4, 1934, Nos. 34761 /34 and 6451/35. [Class 8 (i)] The suction nozzle of a vacuum cleaner is divided into compartments which are alternatively or successively put into communication with and cut off from the suction by means of a rotary or reciprocating valve or valves which are in motion when the cleaner is in operation and the alternation of suction may be employed to operate one or more vertical moving beater members. The nozzle 2 is divided into two parts by a device member 5 having upper inclined surfaces 11, 12, the member 7 formed thereby being coupled to the suction pipe. Pivoted at 15 above this triangular member are arms 16, 17, carrying springs 18 controlling two valve flaps 13, 14. The arms 16, 17, terminate in surfaces 20 which are a close fit in the housing 19 and which are adapted to contact with blocks 27. These blocks 27 are attached to beater elements 23, 24 slidable over guide pins 25. In the positions shown the valve plate 13 is closed and the valve plate 14 is open so that suction is applied to the right-hand section 4 of the nozzle. Suction in the right-hand chamber then draws down the right-hand arm 16 whereupon the opening 12 is closed by the valve 14 and the valve 13 opens the left-hand side 3 to suction. The rising movement of the arm 17 allows the beater 23 to rise and falling arm 16 results in the beater 24 being pushed down. The oscillating valve and arm apparatus is carried by a cover 6 which is pivotally secured to the main nozzle.
