Abstract

298,495. Steurs, A. Oct. 8, 1927, [Convention date]. Actuating diaphragm pumps by fluid-pressure. -Compressed air is forced from a chamber 1 through a valve 12 to a reservoir by a bell-shaped rubber bag 2 held at its edges 3 and swelled out from contracted shape, shown dotted, to fill the reservoir 1 by pressure fluid delivered through the inlet 17 valve 20 and perforated partition 17. When the bag is fully swelled out to fill the reservoir, thus expelling all the air from the reservoir. the top of the bag tips up a plate 5 pivoted about 6 thus lowering a valve 8 from its seat 9 and allowing atmospheric pressure to act on top of the bag and in the pressure balancing pipe 30. The pressure in chamber 29, therefore, falls and piston 26 drops, opening valve passage 24 and closing valve 20 cutting off inlet water pressure. Water therefore flows from the bag through perforated partition 17 through passage 24 into chamber 31 down a suction column pipe 32 to a reservoir, while the chamber 1 receives a fresh supply of air through the ports 15 of the automatic rubber valve 16. When the bag 2 has emptied itself and contracted, plate 5 tips up, closing valve port 9 while the last quantity of water from the bag 2 rushing down the suction pipe 32 causes a suction in the chamber 31 thus lifting the piston 26 closing valve 24 and opening valve 20 to allow pressure fluid to pass through once more. The piston 26 has a rubber bag 28 on its underside.
