Abstract

462,422. Chains adapted to form rigid struts. CLUTE, H. W. April 6, 1936, No. 10142. [Class 80 (iii)] A chain mechanism which is adapted to transmit both tension and compression forces comprises means for locking the chain against bending, such means being brought into and out of engagement with the links of the chain in a direction parallel to the joint pins. In the construction shown, the mechanism comprises two parallel chains having links 9 connected by plates 10 and disposed so that the links of one chain break joint with those of the other. The adjacent faces of the links are provided with tongues and grooves so that when the links lie together they are prevented from bending about the joint pins and form a rigid bar. The chains are separated by a wedge to enable them to pass over a double sprocket wheel. Tapering guides are provided on each side of the sprocket to engage the chains with each other. '
