Abstract

495,894. Flexible members adapted to form struts. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and CLARKE, W. H. V. June 29, 1937, No. 18020. [Class 80 (iii)] In chains of the type in which the links are free to bend only in one direction, rollers are provided mounted on the links of the chain which rollers bear on the concave surface of guide sheaves when such chain is used to transmit compression round a curved path. The chain consists of alternate links such as 1, 2, of which the links 2 fit inside the links 1 and are pivoted thereto by pins 4 passing through holes 3. Edges 5, 6 of adjacent links abut one another to prevent bending in one direction. Each of one kind of link, e.g. 2, carries on pins 8, rollers 7 which project beyond the links and are adapted to engage a guide sheave 14, Fig. 5, when the chain in passing over a pulley 13 transmits a compressive load. The pulley may be a sprocket adapted to mesh with the rollers 7. In a modification, Fig. 9, the chain consists of pairs of plates 9 pivoted by pins 4 to pairs of plates 10. The latter having projections 12 adapted to abut flanges 11 on the plates 9. Rollers 7 of relatively large diameter are mounted on the pins 7 and serve to guide the chain either around a pulley as in Fig. 5, or between two surfaces such as 14, 15, Fig. 11.
