[Class 18] A rectangular box or carton made by erecting a single blank of cardboard, millboard or the like, has the end wall of its hinged lid b composed of two freely movable side wings k<1>, k<2>, and a central extension flap l having a fold-over portion m, which is turned inwardly over the wings holding them against the extension flap without tongues and slots, or pleating, the spring action of wings and fold-over portion tending to hold the lid, when closed, in frictional and somewhat resilient engagement with the corresponding upstanding wall of the body. The side walls are also prevented from splaying outwards. The blank is scored along the chain dotted lines, and cut on the full lines. The body is formed by bending up the extension flap e, and side walls d<1>, d<2>, turning in wings f<1>, f<2> and folding over them, a flap h. The combined length of the wings f<1>, f<2>, is substantially equal to the width of the flap h so that the whole may be secured by one staple or by stitching. Wings g<1>, g<2> are provided with interengaging tabs g<3>, g<4>. Either or both of fold lines q, r are formed with a series of short slits, to inhibit cracking of the cardboard. Diagonal scores o<1>, o<2> enable the box to be collapsed. The depth of the flap l and wings k<1>, k<2>, or the depth of these and the flaps i<1>, i<2> may be considerably reduced.
