Abstract
460,921. Screw propellers. SCHWARZ, GES., G. Aug. 8, 1935, Nos. 22440 and 22441. Convention dates, Aug. 8, 1934 and Aug. 17, 1934. [Class 114] The blades of a screw propeller are adjustable in pitch in response to the temperature of the surrounding air. The blade 2 has an arm 4 which carries a weight 16 adapted under centrifugal force to tend to alter the pitch of the blade. This arm 4 is connected with an arm 3 on the hub by means of a thermic control device 5. This latter consists of a cylinder 9 filled with liquid and containing piston 10 which is under spring restraint and has an extension in a smaller cylinder 12 communicating with a larger one by passages 14. Changes in the expansion of the liquid within the cylinder due to changes of temperature result in relative movement of the piston 10 in the cylinder 9 and thereby changes the position of the blade. The piston passes through a stopper 13 of elastic material. The thermic control device may be used as at 35 as an adjustable stop limiting the end position of the pitch movement. In this case the device is mounted on an arm 33 on the hub and carries the projection 30 adapted to contact with a projection on the blade. The control may be single acting in which case the other limiting position 39 is fixed, or there may be a thermic control for both end positions. A superposed control is effected by disposing the thermic device 55 adjacent to tubes 57 which can be supplied with heated gases under valve control 48 from the exhaust pipe of the driving motor. In addition another pipe 67 receives cold air under valve control 62 from an inlet 60, open to the atmosphere which is used for passing colder air on to the device when rapid cooling is required.
