[Class 36] A cable system comprises an insulated conductor provided with an electrostatic shielding member in the form of a close fitting conductive layer surrounding the conductor insulation, and an enclosure for the conductor and shielding member, a relatively small portion of the shielding member being insulated from the remaining portion of the shielding member and from earth so as to provide a capacity coupling between the conductor and apparatus, such as an instrument or relay, external to the enclosure. Fig. 1 shows insulated conductors 1-3 submerged in oil 5 under pressure in a pipe line 4, the insulated conductors being wrapped with electrostatic shielding tapes 13 and the end portions of the conductors passing through oil-filled pipes 10 to terminal structures 11. Within the pipes 10 each shielding tape is divided into three sections 15, Figs. 1 and 2, the central section of which is insulated from the pipe 10 and from the other sections by insulators 20 and which serves to couple electrostatically the cable to an instrument transformer 25 located exteriorly of the pipe 10. The lower section 15 of shielding tape is insulated from the main shielding tape 13 by varnished cambric 16. In a modified construction the sections 15 of the shielding tape are insulated from one another by insulating tape. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 458,029. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
