Abstract
457,612. Piston-rings. W.P. (LYMING- TON), Ltd., and HOWLETT, J. W., Radial Works, Stanford Road, Lymington, Hampshire.-(Simplex Piston Ring Co. of Amer., Inc. ; 1966, East 66th Street, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.) June 1, 1935, Nos. 15976 and 21836. [Class 122 (i)] A piston - ring comprises a bearing surface of steel, having a scleroscope hardness of between 25 and 65, and a harder steel or cast iron backing spring which is between 1À2 to 3À5 times harder than the bearing surface. The soft steel may be cemented dovetailed or deposited electrolytically on the spring. Alternatively, a steel ring may have its inner periphery casehardened to provide the spring portion. The soft steel ring may comprise laminations 7 backed by a wave spring 4 and bevelled or set back from the cylinder wall to provide oil channels. The groove depth may be regulated by shims 3. Relative rotation of the laminations is prevented by projections 10 thereon engaging between the waves of the spring, or the latter may engage in aligned recesses in the laminations. The soft steel may be inserted in a groove 13 in a cast iron spring 4, Fig. 9. Specification 427,256 is referred to.
