456,586. Inductances. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London, and CRAYMER, H. J., 37, Bishops Road, Chelmsford. May 11, 1935, No. 13916. [Class 37] A variable inductance for use, for example, as anode tuning coil in a wireless transmitter comprises a double helix of tubular conductor 3, a radial contact arm 13 for effecting continuous adjustment of the length of conductor in circuit, and a plurality of contact strips 20 for short-circuiting the turns of the conductor not in circuit. The contact arm 13 is fixed to an operating shaft 6 which has rotatably mounted thereon a panshaped copper member 17 carrying radially extending guides 19 spaced at 120. Slidably extending through each guide is a flexible contact strip 20 anchored at 20a to the frame of the coil and at 20b to a spider 22 slidable on the shaft 6. Thus longitudinal movement of the shaft due to the helical path of the contact arm 13 engaging the turns of the conductor causes the strips 20 to slide through their guides and bear on the turns between the contact 13 and the end of the coil. The pan 17 acts as a screen between the active and idle turns of the coil. Cooling fluid is circulated through the turns of the coil and may pass to the anode water jacket of the transmitter valve along one helix and back along the other.
