Abstract
571,787. Permeability tuning; superheterodyne circuits for wireless reception. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Oct. 25, 1943, No. 17502. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1942. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXV] A permeability tuning arrangement comprising two or more circuits variably tuned by a unitary control to differing but related frequencies which may be included in a superheterodyne receiver comprises coils which may be of similar construction as regards winding length, coil diameter and wire sizes but have differing winding pitches. The Figure shows a coil arrangement in which tuning cores 5, 7 and coil formers 11, 12 are used. The winding 3, which may be in the signal circuit, is of smaller pitch than the winding 6 in the oscillator circuit. The cores are conjointly operated by screwadjusting devices 16, trimmer adjustments 15 being provided. In this arrangement twopoint tracking is obtained. Tracking at additional points may be secured by the provision of a shunt condenser or condensers connected across one or more tappings on the coils preferably on the coil with the larger winding pitch. The oscillator may have the larger or the smaller winding pitch according as the oscillator frequency is above or below the signal. In a modification, Fig. 1A (not shown), band-spread by the use of an auxiliary series coil as described in Specification 571,858 is used. In this arrangement the pitch of the oscillator coil will depend on (1) the signal frequency range, (2) the intermediate frequency, (3) the size of the band-spread coil relevant to the oscillator coil, and (4) the extent of the spread bands. The Specification gives curves showing the relation between the pitch and the effective permeability but in the case of band-spreading by an auxiliary coil the final oscillator coil pitch is empirically determined.
