[Class 47 (ii)] An asbestos curtain 3 adapted to be held in rolled or folded condition in a casing 1 above a doorway or the like and to be released automatically or by hand when necessary, consists of two sections 3a, 3b which overlap substantially, the sections being weighted by a sandbag section 3e and a metal bar 3b and having side flaps 3d. The upper end 3<c> of the curtain is gripped by a clamp 4 secured to one wall of the casing 1, which is of inverted channel formation. The casing is secured to end brackets by screws 1<a>, and has detachable end strips 1<e> to facilitate its assembly with the brackets. The curtain, in rolled condition rests on a loose plate 6 supported at one end on a lip 1<c> of the casing and at the other end on a member 7<a>, 7<c> which is supported by a lip 1<b> and a fusible rod 8. The latter is carried by a hooked plate 9 retained on the wall of the casing by a bracket 10 and spring catch 10<a>. If the plate 9 is pulled free by a cable 9<a>, or the iod 8 melts, the members 7<a> and 6 fall away, releasing the curtain. In modifications, the curtain is supported by a single plate or two hinged plates supported or held together by fusible retainers. The edges of the curtain may be associated with guiding means on the doorway, such as vertical guide channels or rods and rings. Several curtains may be controlled singly or collectively from a central point by electrical or other transmission.
